EMBRACING WOMANHOOD THROUGH LEKGOTLA LA BASADI
The
2020 Lekgotla La Basadi for mothers and daughters was hosted at gentle breeze
in collaboration with jack Bhuda at Soshanguve block DD. The event was centred on
the strengthening of bonds between mothers and daughters.
Ramakgaphola
event coordinator mentioned that the event wasn’t just about mending and
creating relationships and strong bonds between mothers and daughters but also
about empowering and assisting young girls in the community. Most young ladies
cannot afford to buy sanitary towels on a monthly basis. So we decided to do a
sanitary towel drive, the sanitary towels
will then be donated to selected schools in Soshanguve, said
Ramakgaphola.
The event featured a motivational Speaker/ Social Worker Lindiwe Masikane and local DJ Vusi Lewtwalo. “This is very important especially at this age whereby as a parent you are competing with social media and the capitalistic environment we find ourselves in it is no longer easy to have that quality time. So the reason why we called mothers and daughters today is to encourage them to have that quality time and for a mother to remember that she is a teacher and a first role model and girlfriend to her daughter” said Masikane.
Thandiwe
and Bongisani Khumalo a mother daughter duo from East Rand said that they were
eager to attend the event after they had heard about it from one of the event
coordinator and close friend Ramakgakola. Thandiwe said “I think it is very important
that mothers and daughters can sit down together in gather like this and how it
was explained to me is that there’s also going to be motivational speakers and
all that stuff. And I think that it is important too, especially when you’re
going to introduce a social life to your daughter who just turned eighteen to
be there with them.”
Motaung one of the coordinators of the Lekgotla said “We just want to bring ladies in one shelter to discuss and talk about the challenges that most women are facing.” Hosting an event of this manner during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence is important, as this issue has now turned into a pandemic in our society, said Motaung.
